Sen. Angara pushes for naturalization of JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche

Taking a cue from Antipolo Rep. Robbie Puno, Sen. Edgardo “Sonny” Angara has filed a bill to push for the naturalization of NBA players Javale McGee and Andray Blatche.

According to Ruby Tayag’s dzMM report, the neophyte senator believes McGee of the Denver Nuggets and Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets will be able to help Gilas Pilipinas in its campaign at the 2014 FIBA World Basketball Cup.

Angara hopes the two players will become naturalized Filipino citizens in time for the FIBA Worlds, which is set to begin on August 30.

Gilas Pilipinas can win vs Puerto Rico, Senegal at 2014 FIBA World Cup

Despite being grouped against powerhouse teams, Gilas Pilipinas has a very good chance of registering at least two victories in the 2014 FIBA World Basketball Cup.

Sports columnist Enzo Flojo said the nationals are capable of beating 19th-ranked Puerto Rico and lower ranked Senegal (No. 37) if they play their cards right.

“I think we have a chance against Puerto Rico on a good day. On a good shooting day, we have a good chance against Puerto Rico,” Flojo told TJ Manotoc on Wednesday’s episode of "The Score."

Despite Puerto Rico’s excellent guards like Carlos Arroyo and JJ Barea, Flojo believes local players like JVee Casio and LA Tenorio can put up a good fight.

PBA: Ginebra vs San Mig Coffee (Semis Game 4) REPLAY VIDEO

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel squandered a 16-point third quarter lead before eking out an 85-82 over the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers on Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings looked on pace for the easy victory after opening up a 70-54 spread after a Jayjay Helterbrand three-pointer near the end of the third period.

But the Mixers came roaring back, scoring the next 18 points of the game behind James Yap, Mark Barroca, and Justin Melton to take a 72-70 edge.

San Mig Coffee continued the onslaught, taking a 76-72 advantage. But a banked three-pointer by Emman Monfort sparked an 8-4 run that gave Ginebra back the advantage, 80-78.

PBA: Yeng Guiao suspended one game, fined P100k

The PBA on Wednesday handed out a one-game suspension and a fine of P100,000 to Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao for his actions toward league officials during the Elasto Painters’ PLDT Home DSL Philippine Cup semifinals series against the Petron Blaze Boosters.

Guiao met with PBA commissioner Chito Salud on Wednesday morning “regarding his use of a dirty finger pointed toward the commissioner’s and tech committee table.”

The fiery coach was ejected in both Game Three and Game Four of the series, each time complaining about the officiating. He continued to blast the referees after the Elasto Painters’ win over the Boosters last Monday to take a 3-1 lead.

Chot wants Gilas Pilipinas to advance in 2014 FIBA World Cup

National team coach Chot Reyes wants Gilas Pilipinas to reach at least the second round of the 2014 FIBA World Basketball Cup, despite the stiff competition.

Gilas Pilipinas is grouped with basketball powerhouses Argentina and Greece, which are ranked third and fifth in the world, respectively. Also included in their group are Croatia (16th), Puerto Rico (17th) and Senegal (41st).

However, Reyes still hopes the Philippines will pull off a miracle and survive the first round.

“We have no illusions about our group which is very tough but like I said we relish it. We are going to prepare very, very hard. For a team like the Philippines there is no easy group for us in a competition like this,” Reyes said in a Philboxing report by Ronnie Nathanielsz.
