Bam Aquino, Koko Pimentel, Trillanes IV proclaimed as winning senators

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday night named 3 more winning senators in the mid-term polls.

Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV, Antonio Trillanes IV, and Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III ranked 7th to 9th in the Senate race, the Comelec said.

The 3 are all from the administration's Team PNoy ticket.

Only Aquino attended the proclamation Friday night. Trillanes is out of town while Pimentel is ill, Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said.

Pimentel, however, told ANC that he did not attend the event because the proclamation is premature.

He said many votes still unaccounted for.

Pimentel said Comelec should stick to rules and only proclaim winners if uncanvassed votes will no longer affect outcome of the race. The Comelec has already proclaimed Grace Poe and 6 other topnotchers in the Senate race.

Aside from Poe, the other senators proclaimed are Team PNoy candidates Loren Legarda (Nationalist People’s Coalition), Alan Peter Cayetano (Nacionalista Party), Francis Escudero (independent) and Sonny Angara (Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino), and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidate Nancy Binay.

Binay did not show up for her proclamation after UNA protested the partial proclamation.

The Comelec en banc earlier rejected an UNA petition to defer the partial proclamation of senators. UNA campaign manager Toby Tiangco said Comelec should proclaim all the winners. - with reports from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News; ANC
