The NCAA management committee has decided to uphold the recommendation of commissioner Joe Lipa on Letran coach Louie Alas regarding who made a “slit-throat” gesture in Game Two of the NCAA finals last Saturday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.
The Knights clinched the equalizer, 64-55, in Game Two behind double-double performances from Jonathan Belorio and Jam Cortes. But an untoward incident took place in the dying seconds as technical committee member Romy Guevarra crossed the court towards the direction of the Letran bench where he reportedly gave Alas a dirty finger sign.
According to the mancom, a public apology from Alas, whether verbal or written, would end all issues on Alas’ side.
“I’m very sorry about (the slit-throat gesture). Tinawag ng pagkakataon sa pagko-coach,” said Alas. “I didn’t disrespect anybody. I’m just doing my job. I’m always looking out for my team.”
The NCAA mancom members of Jose Rizal University, Emilio Aguinaldo College, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, College of Saint Benilde, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, Arellano University and Mapua Institute of Technology discussed the matter in a three-hour meeting on Monday afternoon at the Bayleaf Hotel in Intramuros
Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Hercules Callanta was not present during the meeting. Fr. Vic Calvo of Letran and Jose Mari Lacson of San Beda inhibited themselves from the proceedings.
Alas was also invited to the meeting to present his side of the story.
Meanwhile, the mancom meeting with Guevarra for them to hear the other side of the story will take place Tuesday, 8 a.m. at the Aloha Hotel.
