Calvin Abueva to replace Ryan Reyes on Gilas Pilipinas line-up

GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has confirmed that Talk ‘N Text guard Ryan Reyes won’t be able to join the team in its two-week training camp in Lithuania, deepening the injury woes of a team even before it could begin the final phase of its preparation for the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship.

Reyes, the Texters' top lock-down defender, has been nursing a hamstring injury that is slow to heal as he joins Sonny Thoss, Kelly Williams and Jared Dillinger on the list of players who won’t make it to the Lithuania camp set on June 2-16 in the Baltic resort town of Palanga.

The fiery national coach, however, insisted that both Reyes and Thoss are still part of the training pool, unlike Williams and Dillinger, who have been completely scratched because of the nature of their illness or injury.

To make matters worse for Gilas, Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva, the man Reyes sees as the perfect replacement for Ryan Reyes in case the TnT guard becomes unavailable, needs surgery for a partial MCL tear which could derail his entry to the national lineup.

“I think they (Gilas) need to know that (Abueva’s condition). Because my understanding after meeting our (team) doctors is the operation needs to be done now since it will take four weeks to heal,” Alaska coach Trillo told Spin.ph.

“So if ever Calvin goes to Lithuania, is there still a possibility for him to go for the operation and miss the next four weeks?” he added.

Reyes said it would be unfortunate to see Abueva miss out on Gilas because of what he can bring to the national squad.

“Siya (Abueva) ang kapalit ni Ryan na nasa isip ko. Malaking bagay siya, saka basically, siya magte-take ng place ni Sonny Thoss as Alaska representative,” said Reyes.
