Dwight Howard left Los Angeles Lakers; joins Houston Rockets

Free agent center Dwight Howard confirmed his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, amid multiple media reports saying that he intends to sign with the Houston Rockets.

In a post on Twitter, Howard addressed the news, expressing his excitement about joining his new team.

“I’ve decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets. I feel its the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I’m looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best,” the post read.

Howard, 27, joined the Lakers from the Orlando Magic in a blockbuster deal prior to last season. Heralded as the anchor of the franchise’s future, Howard struggled under the bright lights of Hollywood, showing the ill effects of a back surgery and having a contentious relationship with Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

After an Achilles injury kept Bryant out for the season, the Lakers were swept in the first round by eventual Western Conference champion San Antonio.

With the Rockets, Howard joins the league’s highest-scoring team that features another star guard James Harden.

In a statement, the Lakers expressed its disappointment with losing Howard.

“We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers. Naturally we’re disappointed,” said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.

“To Dwight, we thank him for his time and consideration, and for his efforts with us last season. We wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his NBA career.”
