The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s long-rumored entry to the Philippines could be happening as soon as next year, according to a report.
In his Twitter account, MMAFighting.com and FOX Sports’ Ariel Helwani posted that UFC president Dana White spoke about staging a fight card in the country in 2014.
“Dana says they will hold a fight card in the Philippines next year,” Helwani said on the social networking site.
White made the comment after the UFC Fight Night 27 card in Indianapolis, which saw welterweight contender Carlos Condit stop Martin Kampmann in the main event.
The UFC has long held interest in the Philippines, with plans for a ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ season based in the country being talked about as early as 2011.
But a Manila fight card has not materialized even though the promotion has been active around the region, holding shows around Asia, like in Japan and Macau, and with plans in the works for one in Singapore next year as well.
The UFC will join a growing local MMA scene, where promotions such as Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC), ONE Fighting Championship and local promotion Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) hold regular events.
