Silva, who was challenging Weidman for the middleweight belt, went for a leg kick in the second round that was checked by the champion, and then crashed to the mat with his left shin broken.

Silva was taken out of the Octagon on a stretcher, and Weidman retained his title via a technical knockout victory.

Many UFC fighters expressed their shock at the incident, with middleweight contender Luke Rockhold tweeting: “I just got sick.”

Several others wondered if the injury signaled the end of Silva’s illustrious career.

“That’s a career-ender,” tweeted Josh Koscheck.

“I feel like that’s the end of Silva’s MMA career,” added women’s contender Sarah Kaufman.

“Anderson Silva will never be the same,” tweeted UFC legend and former champion Tito Ortiz.

Rockhold later added: “Sad to see Anderson go out like that. I hope it’s not the last time we see him. The guy’s a legend.”

UFC legend Dan Henderson, who has fought and lost to Silva before, tweeted: “Seeing the replay of Weidman and Anderson, I honestly would hate to see this end his career. Best wishes.”

Other UFC fighters stressed that Silva, who won a record 16 straight UFC fights before losing to Weidman in July, was still the greatest fighter of all time.

“Anderson has showed up countless of times and amazed fans,” tweeted TJ Grant. “Truly an amaezing fighter and this doesn’t change his all-time status.”

Grant also tweeted “This is why I agree with Georges St-Pierre for stepping away at the right time,” referring to the former welterweight champion’s decision to take a break from the sport.

“Anderson is the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time). My heart goes out to him,” tweeted Ross Pearson. “Worst way to leave this sport, so sad for someone so great.”

Several fighters noted that Silva’s injury was a testament to the difficulty of their chosen sport.

“This game is no joke,” tweeted Conor McGregor.

“That’s the fight game. It’s violence at its core. Checking a leg kick with the high part of the shin is a technique,” tweeted Tom Kong Watson.

The loss was Silva’s second straight. Weidman, meanwhile, is now 11-0 in his UFC career.
