Chot Reyes takes responsibility for Gilas Pilipinas letdown in Asiad
National team head coach Chot Reyes took the blame for Gilas Pilipinas' heartbreaking loss to South Korea in the 2014 Asian Games, which severely dented its chances of winning a medal.
Gilas squandered a 16-point lead and were torched by Tae-Jong Moon for 38 points as they lost, 95-97. It was their third consecutive defeat in the competition.
"The entire responsibility falls on my shoulders," Reyes said after the game. "I want to apologize to our people."
"I'm very proud of my boys. They came out and fought hard. We fought up to the very end," Reyes also said.
Reyes also drew flak for benching naturalized center Marcus Douthit for disciplinary reasons, a day after blasting the big man for "quitting" on the team in their shock loss to Qatar.
But even with Douthit on the bench, Gilas established control, 68-52, behind the three-point sniping of skipper Jimmy Alapag.
The Filipinos were unable to stop Moon, however, who rallied his team in the final quarter and assisted on a dagger triple from Hee Jong that made it 93-89 with a shade under 32 seconds to go.
"He was making shots with the defense all over him," Reyes said of Moon. "Someone gets in a zone like that, it's hard to stop."
Gilas still has a slim chance of making it to the medal round after Kazakhstan pulled off an upset over Qatar in another game.
