Terrence Romeo led Manila West past Sau Paulo, 21-17, and secured the Filipinos’ place in the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3X3 World Tour Final on Saturday in Sendai, Japan.
The former FEU standout had 13 points for Manila West, which posted an early 5-0 lead against the Brazilians.
The lead went up to 10-3 when Aldrech Ramos began connecting his jumpers.
By the time Sau Paulo’s scorers began clicking, it was already too late.
The win assured Manila West, composed of Romeo, Ramos, Rey Guevarra and KG Canaleta, of a spot in the quarterfinal round.
Manila West, however, lost its following game against Bucharest which closed out the Filipino in overtime, 15-13.
Despite lagging behind by one point, Manila West was able to force a game extension via Romeo. But the Romanians hung tough in the final minutes to secure the top placing in Group B.
The Filipinos will move on to the quarterfinals against a qualifier from Pool C where Slovenia, Jakarta and China are grouped.
