Gelo Alolino and Troy Rosario came up with big shots as National University bested Far Eastern University from start to finish in Game 2 Wednesday, 62-47, in the UAAP Season 77 men's basketball tournament finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Anchored on Rosario's dominance inside and out, the Bulldogs hounded the Tamaraws with stifling defense, rallying with a ferocious 16-3 start in the opening period.
Rosario and Glenn Khobuntin continued pounding the hapless FEU side as NU erected their biggest cushion at 22-6 early in the second quarter.
The duo combined for 22 points in the first 20 minutes, outscoring the entire Tamaraws. NU also posted a 32-21 rebounding edge at halftime, including 16 offensive boards that led to 10 second chance points.
FEU tried to battle back halfway through the third after pulling within 24-30, although NU responded with a 7-0 spurt bridging the final two quarters that pushed the advantage up to 45-30.
Belo then scored six that triggered the atart of a 14-5 rally from the Tamaraws that cut the deficit down to 44-50 with under three minutes left.
But it was Alolino who delivered back-breaking hits as he drained back-to-back treys to push the NU lead up to 56-44.
Tolomia answered with a triple of his own, but it was the closest the Morayta squad could get as NU sealed a rubber match.
Game 3 will be on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena. — Sports Desk Online
