Gilas Pilipinas vs Australia Tune Up Game (FULL GAME REPLAY VIDEO)

The Philippine national men’s basketball team hung around for nearly two and a half quarters but could not stop an Australian onslaught in the fourth that sealed a 97-75 victory for the FIBA Oceania champions on the second day of the pocket tournament in Antibes, France.
Gilas Pilipinas, like in their game against France, looked like they belonged on the world level before running into some trouble in the fourth quarter, where they were outscored, 24-12.

Naturalized NBA player Andray Blatche impressed with 20 points and 10 rebounds through three quarters but the Gilas center ran out of stream in the final period, where he failed to contribute much to the Philippines’ cause.

Sen. Angara: Beating FIBA deadline for Andray Blatche naturalization a 'tall order'

Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara admitted Wednesday that beating Fiba’s July 15 deadline to clear the necessary requirements for a naturalized player to be eligible in the coming World Cup won’t be easy.

“It’s a tall order but we will try our best,” Angara, Senate Committee chairman on Games, Amusement and Sports, told INQUIRER in a text message Wednesday.

Angara filed Senate Bill No. 2108 on February 5 granting Filipino citizenship to American Andray Blatche, who plays center for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA, to fortify Gilas Pilipinas’ bid in the World Cup this August.

Chot Reyes not shocked China wasn't picked as FIBA wildcard

Gilas coach Chot Reyes said yesterday it was almost expected that despite its mass market clout, China wouldn’t be awarded one of four wildcard tickets to the FIBA World Cup to be played in six Spanish venues on Aug. 30-Sept. 14.

There were 15 countries that applied for wildcard slots and paid the corresponding donation, reportedly 500,000 Euros or about P30 Million, to the FIBA coffers. London Olympic third placer Russia, 2016 Olympic host Brazil, Turkey (the Turkish appliance and consumer electronics company Beko is a major sponsor) and China were early favorites to join the 20 outright qualifiers. But last Saturday, the FIBA Central Board met here and chose No. 7 Turkey, No. 10 Brazil, No. 5 Greece and No. 39 Finland to play in the World Cup. Aside from Russia and China, left out were Germany, Italy, Canada, Venezuela, Israel, Poland, Nigeria, Qatar and Bosnia-Herzogovina.

FIBA Asia official urges PBA to move Governors' Cup for Gilas

FIBA Asia communications head S. Mageshwaran said the PBA should move the Governors’ Cup to give the national team more time to prepare and allow its best players to join Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

“The third and final conference of the PBA, the Governor’s Cup, can be – and in my opinion should be – put off in support of the national team,” he wrote in a column on the FIBA Asia website.

Chot Reyes to tap old Gilas Pilipinas pool for FIBA World Cup

The composition of Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA World Championship in Spain late this year would depend on the period of time the national team would get for its training.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes hinted at sticking with his old pool if the PBA makes available its players to the national team only at the end of the 2013-2014 PBA season.

“As of now daily training starts Aug. 1. If that’s the case, no time to try new players for roster change,” said Reyes in answering a query on his Twitter account.

Gilas Pilipinas' FIBA World Cup goal: TOP 16

Gilas Pilipinas has set a lofty goal of finishing in the top 16 in the 2014 Fiba World Cup.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios Tuesday reiterated the marching orders given to national coach Chot Reyes: Make the second round of the world championship in Spain on Aug. 30 to Sept. 14.

“[SBP president] Mr. Manny Pangilinan told the team he doesn’t want them to become tourists in Spain,” said Barrios during the PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

In an earlier exclusive interview with the Inquirer, Pangilinan, the business tycoon who supports several sports associations, said the goal was to make it to the top 16, meaning Gilas needs to win two games during the preliminary round to advance.
