Gilas Pilipinas' back-up plan if in case it fails to win FIBA Asia Championship

After losing the bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup two weeks ago, the Philippines has the option to stage one of three Olympic qualifying tournaments in case Gilas fails to win the FIBA Asia championship in Changsha on Sept. 23-Oct. 3 but that will mean participating in another bid process.

SBP executive director Sonny Barrios said the other day he hasn’t received information from FIBA on the details of the Olympic qualifying tournaments that will be held on July 5-10 next year or a month before the Rio Summer Games begin.

Philippine national men’s basketball team mainstay Ranidel de Ocampo, whose hamstring injury has kept him from practicing with Gilas Pilipinas, will still be joining the squad’s trip to Europe after all.

Marc Pingris’ agent, Ed Ponceja explained why Pingris decided to skip participating in the Gilas program, (READ: Marc Pingris unavailable for Gilas Pilipinas) which is gearing up for the FIBA Asia, an Olympic qualifying tournament, to be held in China from September 23 to October 3.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes believes the Philippine national basketball team deserves to be higher than No. 31 in the latest edition of the FIBA World Rankings (READ STORY HERE), especially after its performances in the past three FIBA tournaments.
Gilas rose three spots to No. 31 after their historic run in the FIBA World Cup in Spain. The news came just before the team is set to leave for Incheon, South Korea to play in the Asian Games.

Gilas Pilipinas rises three places in FIBA rankings after World Cup stint

The Philippines national team's stint in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup gave the country a bump in the latest world rankings released by the international basketball body.

From No. 34, the Philippines rose three spots to No. 31 after Gilas Pilipinas finished 21st out of 24 teams in the world championship. Gilas won just one game in the World Cup against Senegal, but became darlings of the tournament after tough defeats against fancied opposition Croatia, Greece, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.

Gabe Norwood's One-handed Dunk No. 3 on FIBA World Cup’s Top 10 Plays (VIDEO)

Philippine national men’s basketball team swingman Gabe Norwood’s dunk over Argentinean NBA player Luis Scola made the list of Top 10 Plays from the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

A video of the Top 10 Plays was posted on the FIBA website on Sunday and Gilas Pilipinas’ high-flying Norwood clocked in at No. 3 behind monster dunks by USA big man Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Kalinic of runner-up Serbia.

USA crush Serbia 129-92 to 2014 FIBA World Cup - Game Highlights (VIDEO)

The United States romped to their fifth basketball World Cup title after overcoming an early deficit to overwhelm the tournament's surprise package Serbia 129-92 in a one-sided final on Sunday.

An athletic U.S. team, missing top NBA players such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant, finished the tournament in grand style with a 9-0 record to retain the title they won in Istanbul in 2010.

European champions France claimed the bronze medal in the basketball World Cup after a superb performance by Nicolas Batum helped them to a 95-93 win over Lithuania in the third-place match on Saturday.

The FIBA Central Board has the power to establish the internal regulations of FIBA, which is the world’s governing body in basketball.
