2014 FIBA World Cup: 10 countries in, 14 more still to come
The tournament field is filling up for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.
At the AfroBasket in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, over the weekend, champions Angola, runners-up Egypt and third-place Senegal all booked their places in next year's hoops extravaganza over the weekend.
Since 1986, the Angolans have only once missed taking part in a FIBA World Championship.
Puerto Rico finished first, undefeated in Group A of FIBA Americas
Puerto Rico defeated Jamaica, 88-82 , won his fourth consecutive match and secured first place in Group A of the FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas, Venezuela.
The “ Boricua” team, who seemed to have the game under control , had to suffer more than necessary to finish. Jose Juan Barea was the best for the winners, with 24 points.
Filipino Treat Huey lose at US Open mixed doubles second round
Filipino Treat Huey and American partner Raquel Kops-Jones bowed to eighth seed Lizel Huber of the United States and Marcelo Melo of Brazil, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5, in the second round of the US Open mixed doubles last Sunday (Monday in Manila).
Teaming up for the second time in a Grand Slam event, Huey and Kops-Jones had 20 unforced errors, including nine double faults in the one hour and 38 minutes match.
Barangay Ginebra, Petron, Air21, Meralco trade proposals on hold
TWO separate trade proposals remain on hold as the teams play hard ball in the negotiations.
No deal has so far been submitted to the PBA Commissioner’s Office on trades involving Meralco and Air21 in one transaction, and Air21, Barangay Ginebra, and Petron in another, but only because the teams want to get more for their respective pieces, sources said.
US Open: Roger Federer upset by No.19 seed Tommy Robredo
Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo has posted a shock upset over five time champion Roger Federer, winning their fourth round battle 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4 at the US Open on Monday night.
The 31-year-old Robredo snapped a 0-10 FedEx ATP Head2Head losing record against the Swiss seventh seed in the match which lasted two hours and 24 minutes.
UST’s Ferrer "super flattered" to be invited for Gilas cadet team
University of Santo Tomas stalwart Kevin Ferrer Gilas Pilipinas won’t have any second thoughts accepting the invitation of national coach Chot Reyes to become part of the Gilas Pilipinas cadet pool.
Ferrer said it has been a long-time dream of his to become a regular part of the national team.
“Super flattered ako dahil na-consider ako ni coach (Chot),” said the young UST forward in a talk with Spin. “Of course, I’ll accept this invitation.”
