It wasn't quite a Fight of the Year contender, but it was definitely a fight, and a toe-to-toe war tonight in Denver between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov. In the end, Provodnikov beat Alvarado down and forced him to retire on his stool after 10 rounds, winning the WBO junior welterweight title.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight standouts Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez engaged each other in a mixed martial arts (MMA) battle for the ages yesterday at UFC 166, the "greatest night" from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Over the course of three hard-fought rounds, Melendez and Sanchez put on an instant classic that will go down with Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar I from the first The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Finale and Mauricio Rua vs. Dan Henderson from UFC 139, among a handful of others, as one of the best fights in company history.

This time, Cain Velasquez got his finish. In an absolutely brutal conclusion to their trilogy, Velasquez finished Junior dos Santos in the fifth and final round Saturday night at Houston's Toyota Center. 

The main event of UFC 166 was stopped at 3:09 of the final round as Velasquez retained his UFC heavyweight championship.
