Gilas Pilipinas target to qualify in 2016 Rio Olympics
Incoming PBA chairman Ramon Segismundo said the league-backed Gilas Pilipinas intends to qualify to the Olympics, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
This, he said, is apart from the nationals’ target to “make it to the Top 16” of the FIBA World Cup in 2014.
This is why, according to Segismundo, the league is including in its plans to rally the country behind Gilas and the PBA.
“Philippine basketball is returning to the world stage and this goes beyond the game,” he said in the PBA website. “It’s all about our country, the people, and teaching the values of unity, discipline and the can-do spirit that, yes, the Filipinos can.”
Gilas Pilipinas made a spectacular second-place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship, which was hosted by Manila last August.
The second-placing behind powerhouse Iran set the Philippines’ return to the world stage of basketball, which is the FIBA World Cup.
Rallying the nation behind Gilas is just part of Segismundo’s eight-point plan that was presented to the league governors Monday night during their meeting in Sydney, Australia.
