The Filipinos got a taste of Russian physicality early, after starting center Sonny Thoss' head was busted open from an elbow from his counterpart minutes into the game.
Later in the opening period, a Russian player swung his arm at Gilas star Terrence Romeo, resulting in a commotion. As Romeo was walking away from the confrontation, another Russian player threw the ball at the GlobalPort guard.

That seemingly galvanized Gilas, which took a 43-40 lead at halftime with the energetic play of youngsters Moala Tautuaa, Troy Rosario, and Matt Ganuelas-Rosser.

The Philippines continued to clamp down on the taller Russians in the second half, opening a 13-point bubble on a JC Intal three-pointer, 61-48, late in the third quarter.

The Russians threatened early in the fourth period, 61-55, but the more energetic Gilas side kept their opponents at bay.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Ranidel De Ocampo and Dondon Hontiveros sparked a 10-0 run that put the game away late, 83-65.

The win gave the Philippines its second victory in three games in the tournament, which is part of its buildup for the FIBA Asia Championship later this month.

Russia, meanwhile, suffered its first loss in four games in the tournament. The squad earlier defeated teams from South Korea, New Zealand, and the United States.
