FIBA is reconsidering its ban on the basketball federation of Lebanon,  which may pave the way for the team to participate in the FIBA Asia Championship in August.

According to a report by the Daily Star Lebanon, the decision may be reversed after Lebanon’s courts withdrew interference in affairs of Lebanon’s basketball federations

“We will reconsider the decision of FIBA Monday whether to lift the ban,” FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian, a Lebanon national, told the Daily Star.

Lebanon’s basketball federation issued a statement that it has already informed FIBA about the developments with the hope of paving the way to lift the ban.

FIBA suspended Lebanon last Friday and arranged to have a replacement team for the tournament. Iraq was the original choice for replacement, but the country begged off due to lack of preparation, with United Arab Emirates taking its place. (read the article here)

With Lebanon back in the picture, plans for the team to fly to Manila to hold its two-week training camp will finally push through.

“I am very happy and relieved that we have a chance to play in Asia and qualify for a fourth time,” swingman Jean Abdel-Nour told the Daily Star. “The team went from depression and sadness to excitement and happiness when we heard the good news. Players felt relieved since everyone was also concerned about their future.

“I feel that the national team is being used by some corrupt people who only want to achieve their personal political benefits,” said Rodrigue Akl. “As for now I am happy for myself and for true and only true basketball fans because our chance to qualify for the World Championship is back again.”
