NBA: Spurs' Tracy McGrady announces retirement
Seven-time NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady announced his retirement Monday on the ESPN show First Take.
He later confirmed the news on his official Twitter account, thanking his supporters, but also adding, "Stay tuned."
Thank all of you who have supported me over 16 NBA seasons, 7 All-Stars, and countless exciting moments. Retiring from NBA. Stay tuned. #mac, he tweeted.
McGrady, the ninth overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft, turned 34 last May. His career spanned 16 seasons and seven teams in the NBA, having most recently played for the San Antonio Spurs, who lost in seven games in the 2013 NBA Finals to the Miami Heat.
Drafted by the Toronto Raptors, the 6'8" shooting guard made his name with the Orlando Magic, picking up the 2001 Most Improved Player award and twice becoming the league's scoring champion (2003 and 2004). He was later traded to the Houston Rockets, where he had several successful seasons with Chinese center Yao Ming.
Injuries however prevented that pairing from having prolonged success, and he was traded once more in 2010 to the New York Knicks. At that point, McGrady transitioned into the role of bit-player, spending a season each with the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks.
In 2012, McGrady landed with the Chinese Basketball Association's Qingdao Eagles, but he was unable to affect his squad's fortunes as they still landed in last place.
McGrady then signed with the Spurs prior to the 2013 NBA Playoffs, though he rarely saw the floor outside of garbage time.
He finishes with career averages of 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.9 blocks.
