PBA: Gary David ready to play again for GlobalPort

Still on a high from the love and support showed to him by Filipino basketball fans in the FIBA-Asia Championship, Globalport Batang Pier superstar Gary David hopes that an ounce of the support will be given to him when he returns to his mother ballclub.

PBA: Gary David for GlobalPort

After almost a week since he last wore the Gilas-Pilipinas jersey, David still can't find exact answers as to why he became one of the team’s most popular players.

“Hindi ko rin alam. Pero siguro nakita nila na ako yung klase ng tao na talagang mapagmahal -- sa pamilya, sa mga kaibigan,” said the Dinalupihan, Bataan dribbler.

True enough, David is of the most friendly cagers in the league, someone who will not turn down a request for a photo-op or autograph.

David is also popular among Instagram account owners as he regularly gives his fans the needed reply on his picture posts.

“Syempre, nag effort yung mga fans na kausapin ka kaya siyempre kung hindi busy, marapat lang na mag effort ka rin na sagutin sila,” said the soft-spoken 3-time PBA scoring champion.

His openness and accessibility to his supporters did pay off. Amidst his struggling performance in the early goings of the FIBA -Asia Championship, fans never wavered in giving him enough morale boost.

“Natuwa talaga ako sa suporta ng tao. Kasi kahit na medyo mababa yung laro ko, nag-struggle ako, hindi nila ako tinalikuran. Ini-aangat pa nga nila ang morale ko,” he said.

And now that he is back to being a Batang Pier, David is hopeful that fans will still cheer for him.

“Alam naman natin dito sa PBA, iba na ang suporta ng fans--- kanya-kanyang team na. Pero sana lang kung hindi namin kalaban teams nila, kahit kaunting palakpak sa amin… ikakasaya ng mga kakampi ko yun,” David told Solar Sports Desk with the usual smile on his face.

Though he’s still on a privilege leave of absence after being part of the national team, David already joined his teammates at Globalport last Tuesday.

The 34-year-old streak shooter will suit up against the defending Governors' Cup champion Rain or Shine Elastopainters Saturday afternoon at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

“Ready na ako kung gagamitin ako ni coach. Saka excited na rin akong maglaro ulit para sa team ko,” said David who is optimistic that they can again register another win after a breakthrough 101-94 victory in their conference opener against Air 21 Express last Wednesday.
