Boxing judge CJ Ross defends 114-114 in Mayweather-Canelo fight
The controversial judge who penned an even score after the 12-round bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has defended her contentious scorecard.
Boxing judge CJ Ross told the Las Vegas Review Journal that she had Alvarez winning that much round noting that the Mexican had actually worked effectively inside and had connected the more telling jabs.
“When you score 12 rounds of boxing, you’re scoring 12 separate fights. From where I sat, there were a lot of close rounds and a lot of exchanges Canelo was able to win. Canelo was able to land his punches effectively from the inside and control the rounds I gave him,” Ross said.
The 64-year-old Ross scored the seemingly one-sided match 114-114 while fellow judges Dave Moretti and Craig Metcalfe had it 116-112 and 117-111, respectively for Mayweather.
Incidentally, Ross was the same judge who gave Timothy Bradley a 115-113 winning tally over multi-division world champion Manny Pacquiao in a fight many thought the Filipino boxer won handily.
“The whole world was watching, and obviously that scorecard was a disgrace. How that judge could be appointed after the decision of Bradley and Pacquiao is not a question I can answer,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
Nevada commission chairman Bill Brady said the controversy will surely impel them to make the proper changes to avoid discrepancies in future fights.
“I can guarantee there will be some changes. We have to protect the fighters, the viewing public and the betting public. We’re going to look at our vetting process. It needs to be more thorough. We have to get this right,” said Brady.
Meantime, Filipino boxing analyst and TV commentator Atty. Ed Tolentino said Ross’ statement may be hard to justify specifically the fact that a same controversy arose during the Pacquiao-Bradley match.
“What she said was a shallow argument. Paano naman yung kay Bradley-Pacquiao? Ano sasabihin niya, na yun din yung nakita niya? It’s hard to argue on that point because any other judge can use the same alibi. For me, it’s an alibi,” said Tolentino.
