Rain or Shine management open to trade Beau Belga
Management of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters is still trying to secure a new deal with starting center Beau Belga, but is open to making a trade if they could not agree to terms on a new contract.
“Kung masyadong malaki yung hihingin niya baka hindi namin kayanin,” Rain or Shine team executive Mamerto Mondragon told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.
Belga helped the Elasto Painters win the Governors’ Cup in 2012 and finish runner-up in the 2013 Philippine Cup. His status as one of the top big men in the PBA was underscored when he was selected to be part of the Gilas Pilipinas national pool, ending up as the last man cut from the team that competed in the FIBA Asia Championship.
Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said the issue lies beyond simply basketball.
“If it’s a question if I want him, I want him. Ngayon kung if it’s a question of money, it’s not my call.
“Kung may PDAF lang puwede nating isama doon sa mga health benefits pang-extra rice,” said Guiao in jest. Apart from his coaching duties, he also serves as a congressman for Pampanga.
Belga is expected to draw a lot of interest in the trading front, with teams such as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Talk ‘N Text reportedly likely to be suitors for his services.
He emerged as a starting-caliber PBA center in 2011 after joining the Elasto Painters from the Meralco Bolts in a multi-team deal. He has also previously seen action for Purefoods and Air 21, where he was first coached by Guiao.
