UAAP considering a ban on foreign players in 2016

The UAAP is now considering a ban on foreign players, which has become one of the more contentious issues hounding the collegiate league.

A source from the UAAP confirmed to ABS-CBNnews.com on Wednesday that the subject of banning foreign players was “informally” discussed during last month’s meeting between the presidents of the UAAP member schools.

That September meeting was called to address issues that have plagued the league in Season 76.

The source explained that if ever the move is agreed upon by the member schools, this would be formalized in 2015.

“This means 2015 will be the last year they can recruit foreign players,” the source said, adding that this issue has yet to be “tabled” by the UAAP board, which could happen at the end of the year.

A report on the sports website Spin on Wednesday quoted University of the Philippine president Alfredo Pascual as saying the state university “fully supports” the ban on foreign players.

“The NCAA has already laid down the policy setting 2015, I think, as the start of the no recruitment of foreign players ... I think it is but appropriate if we follow suit in the UAAP," Pascual told the website.

Spin.ph also sought a comment from National University board representative Nilo Ocampo, who gave his thoughts on the issue.

“There are some legit foreigners who are really studying - pero how do you differentiate yung nag-aaral talaga at sa ni-recruit as athletes. 'Yun ang mahirap,” Ocampo told the website.
