San Mig Coffee, San Miguel Beer face off in crucial match in race to No.2
SAN Mig Super Coffee and sister team San Miguel Beer face off in an important match in the race to the the No. 2 playoff seeding in the lone PBA Commissioner’s Cup Saturday game at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Mixers (4-2) managed to snap their two-game skid on Wednesday when they plastered Air21 Express, 97-84, behind a lethal defensive job in the second half.
Coach Tim Cone said the victory over the Express gives the Mixers the momentum they need heading to their 6 p.m. match with the second-running Beermen (5-2), who are coming off a two-week layoff.
“We have San Miguel Beer coming up. So you have to really take care of the wins until you get to those bug guys like San Miguel Beer, Talk “N Text, and have yourself, go in pressure-free against San Miguel,” Cone said.
“But this (game) gives us a chance to stay in contention for the top 2.”
Cone mentioned that the Mixers are preparing some special defensively against Beermen gunner Marcio Lassiter, whom the multi-titled PBA coach had a chance to see up close and personal during the All-Star game last week.
“I’ve got a chance to get up close and personal how good Marcio Lassiter really is. He’s really good. Watched him during the All-Star practice, and he’s wow,” the all-time winning PBA coach explained.
The 6-foot-2 sweet-shooting guard out of Cal State Fullerton is averaging 13.7 points on 36 percent three-point shooting clip.
Lassiter has scored in double figures during the team’s first six games, before being held to just three points on 1-of-12 shooting from the field in the Beermen’s 78-88 loss to the Alaska Aces in Binan, Laguna on March 29.
Meantime, San Miguel coach Biboy Ravanes said they took advantage of the two-week lull to work on the team’s cohesion as well as get the locals better connected to import Kevin Jones.
The 6-foot-7 Jones posted averages of 27.4 points, 15 rebounds and 2.6 assists in his first five games.
But the former West Virginia standout is coming off a PBA career-low 11 points against the Aces.
“Ano man ang ang nangyari sa Alaska game namin, we worked on our cohesiveness. Saka si Kevin Jones mas komportable na siya sa sistema ng team,” said Ravanes.
Tournament format gives top two teams at the end of the single round eliminations twice-to-beat incentives heading to the quarterfinals.
Talk ’N Text already holds the No. 1 spot after opening the conference with eight straight wins in the nine-game eliminations.
