What can convince Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight Manny Pacquiao ?
Just a few hours after he declared himself available for the Manny Pacquiao fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr. again flip-flopped and practically ignored every query pertaining to the superfight.
Mayweather is considered a defensive virtuoso and some pundits claim this trait could foil Pacquiao’s heavy volume punching. But why is he avoiding Pacquiao like the plague?
Boxing promoter Bob Arum has an explanation.
"I promoted the guy for 10 years and I know how difficult it was to get him in the ring with any southpaw,” the Top Rank CEO told Gareth Davis of The Telegraph.
“When you talk about a southpaw who can move like Manny, that's not the kind of opponent that Mayweather feels he would do well against. That's the problem.”
But Arum said there’s one way that may convince Mayweather to fight Pacquiao. “If Manny agreed to fight right-handed, the fight would be agreed in five minutes," he said in jest.
Arum added that Mayweather’s multi-million dollar deal with Showtime is another reason for the American boxer’s continued evasiveness.
Since the unbeaten American is already assured of huge paydays with Showtime, he no longer finds it practical to stake his immaculate record against the unpredictable Filipino fighter.
"I don't think Mayweather will ever agree to fight Pacquiao, particularly while he has a cushy deal with Showtime. He makes money fighting anybody," Arum said.
Shortly after another victory against Marcos Maidana over the weekend, Mayweather said he wants to make the Pacquiao fight happen.
"I got to go back and talk to my team, I'm not ducking or dodging no opponent. If a Pacquiao fight presents itself, let's make it happen," he said during a post-fight interview.
But when he was followed up the next morning, he made a 180-degree turn and ignored questions about the super fight.
