Chot Reyes hopes Philippine youth team can win Gold

The Gilas Pilipinas national squad brought joy to the country when it won the silver medal in the FIBA Asia Championship last August.

The Philippine national youth basketball team has a chance to do one better on Saturday when it takes on China for the gold medal in the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship.

No less than Gilas coach Chot Reyes is rooting for the Filipino teens to top what their senior counterparts accomplished.

Gilas Pilipinas won’t be the country’s only national team that will play in the world basketball stage next year.

The Philippine national youth basketball team followed the path blazed by their senior counterparts after scoring a victory over Chinese Taipei, 77-72, in the semifinals of the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship in Tehran, Iran on Thursday.

Ateneo high school gunner Jolo Mendoza had 28 points on four three-pointers, including a long bomb with 1:21 left that gave the Philippines back the lead for good.

Philippine U16 team destroys Iran; enters semis of FIBA Asia Championship

The Philippine national youth basketball team showed no fear against an Iranian squad playing in front of a home crowd, fashioning out an impressive 79-52 victory in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship on Wednesday in Tehran.

Ateneo high school stars Jolo Mendoza and Mike Nieto led the way with 16 and 13 points, respectively, for the Philippines, which saved the best for last by outscoring Iran, 22-6, in the final period.

With the win, the Filipinos booked a ticket to the semifinals of the competition, setting up a date with Chinese Taipei. The Taiwanese won earlier in the day against Bahrain, 70-67.

Petron wins vs Rain or Shine on PBA Semis Game 2 (REPLAY VIDEO)

June Mar Fajardo dominated down low, finishing with a career-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to carry the Petron Blaze Boosters to a pulsating 90-88 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in Game Two of their Governors’ Cup semifinals series on Wednesday at Cuneta Astrodome.

The rookie big man from Cebu scored 14 points, including three dunks, in the third quarter, allowing the Boosters to take command against the shorthanded Elasto Painters.

Petron was still up by nine points, 89-80, with less than two minutes left before Rain or Shine came roaring back. The Elasto Painters were within a single point after a putback by Beau Belga with 7.7 seconds left.

Philippine Under-16 team clinches top seed in FIBA Asia

The Philippines survived India’s torrid three-point shooting as it hacked out a 78-67 victory to clinch the top seeding in Group F and arrange a quarterfinal showdown with fancied Iran in the third FIBA-Asia Under-16 Championship in Tehran, Iran yesterday.

Hope Christian School’s Jolo Go exploded with a game-high 26 points, highlighted by six triples, as the Nationals forged a three-way tie with Japan and Chinese Taipei on 4-1 (win-loss) record. The Phl emerged the top team after the tiebreak.
