Chot Reyes to tap old Gilas Pilipinas pool for FIBA World Cup

The composition of Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA World Championship in Spain late this year would depend on the period of time the national team would get for its training.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes hinted at sticking with his old pool if the PBA makes available its players to the national team only at the end of the 2013-2014 PBA season.

“As of now daily training starts Aug. 1. If that’s the case, no time to try new players for roster change,” said Reyes in answering a query on his Twitter account.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. calls Manny Pacquiao a 'desperate dog'

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has dismissed Manny Pacquiao's recent victory over Brandon Rios as a win over “a blown-up lightweight” and referenced the eight-division titlewinner's tax issues as “68 million problems” that “he wants me to solve,” during a recent Q&A interview on FightHype.com.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 knockouts) characterized Pacquiao's quest to fight him as being asked to “throw an old, desperate dog a bone” and also re-iterated his assertion that he “will never do business” with Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, meaning that a megabout between the two would have to wait until 2015, when Arum's contract runs out, according to Pacquiao.

Gilas Pilipinas' FIBA World Cup goal: TOP 16

Gilas Pilipinas has set a lofty goal of finishing in the top 16 in the 2014 Fiba World Cup.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios Tuesday reiterated the marching orders given to national coach Chot Reyes: Make the second round of the world championship in Spain on Aug. 30 to Sept. 14.

“[SBP president] Mr. Manny Pangilinan told the team he doesn’t want them to become tourists in Spain,” said Barrios during the PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

In an earlier exclusive interview with the Inquirer, Pangilinan, the business tycoon who supports several sports associations, said the goal was to make it to the top 16, meaning Gilas needs to win two games during the preliminary round to advance.

MVP to Gilas Pilipinas: Don't be tourists in Spain (FIBA World Cup)

They’re not going to Spain in August to watch a bull fight, try its famous cuisine, troop to its crowded beaches or visit its ancient basilicas.

The Gilas players will be there to vie in the FIBA World Cup and if possible win a game or two.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan has given members of Gilas Pilipinas, from the coaches down to the players, their marching orders.

“MVP (Pangilinan) told the whole team he does not want them to be tourists in Spain,” said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios yesterday.
