PBA to move Governors' Cup to accommodate Gilas campaign?
The PBA is mulling moving the schedule of the season-ending Governors’ Cup to accommodate the Philippine national men’s basketball team’s participation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup that will be held in Spaing from August 30 to September 14.
“It is now under discussion and this will be one of the things to be tackled in the next board meeting,” said Ramon Segismundo, chairman of the PBA Board of Governors.
The Gilas Pilipinas national squad qualified for the World Cup last season after a silver-medal run to the FIBA Asia Championship. That came after the league altered its schedule to move the Governors’ Cup until after the tournament in Manila, giving coach Chot Reyes more time to prepare for the competition.
Segismundo, in an earlier address to fans, hinted at his support for a move to change the PBA schedule anew to support Gilas.
“Every Filipino hoop fan should take ownership of this quest. In the same way, that we, in the PBA, should take ownership and accountability of this national endeavor,” he wrote in his Chairman’s Corner column on InterAksyon.com.
“With respect to the Governor’s Cup, we can keep an open mind and explore innovative approaches in releasing the best players and adhering as well as possibly flexing the schedules.”
The Gilas campaign in the World Cup marks the first time in four decades that a Philippine team will compete in basketball’s highest stage.
Moving the Governors’ Cup would give Reyes some three months to prepare for the tournament, with the Commissioner’s Cup slated to end on May 20 at the latest.
