Former US national team captain Thomas Dooley appointed Azkals coach

A former captain of the United States national men’s football team will take over as the new coach of the Azkals, the squad announced on Friday.

Thomas Dooley, a German-American who led USA to its World Cup appearances in the 1990s, is expected to arrive in the Philippines next week to steer the Philippine team in their big tournaments this year. The development was announced on the Azkals’ official Twitter account.

Dooley, 52, had a decorated playing career as a defender, playing for German club FC Kaiserslautern which he helped won the German Cup in 1990 and the Bundesliga in 1991. He also clinched the title in the UEFA Cup, Europe’s top club competition, with Schalke 04 in 1997.

Marc Pingris, LA Tenorio welcome possible of McGee, Blacthe into Gilas

Philippine national men’s basketball stalwarts Marc Pingris of San Mig Coffee and LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel welcomed the news of the possible entry of NBA players into the Gilas Pilipinas lineup for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

“Sa totoo, kailangan natin kasi maliit tayo. Alam mo naman ang Pilipino pag naglaro puso lang naman,” said Pingris, who was instrumental in Gilas’ silver medal run in the FIBA Asia Championship last year while battling bigger players down low.

“Malaking tulong, of course, with their experience, NBA experience,” added Tenorio. “Malalaki rin sila, so malaking bagay yun.”

GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes bared on Thursday that they are looking to tap either Javale McGee or fellow NBA player Andray Blatche to reinforce the national team in the Fiba World Cup in Spain in August.

Emerging from a meeting with the PBA board on Thursday, Reyes said two bills have been filed in Congress by Rep. Robbie Puno seeking the naturalization of McGee of the Denver Nuggets and Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets.

PBA shortens season to give way to Gilas prep for FIBA World Cup

GILAS Pilipinas’ buildup for this year's Fiba World Cup and Asian Games was given a boost after the PBA board of governors on Thursday unanimously approved to cut short the pro league's 39th season from a projected ending of August 15 to July 15.

Commissioner Chito Salud said under a board resolution agreed upon on Thursday during its meeting at the PBA office, the finals of the ongoing 39th season's final two conferences will be shortened from the original best-of-seven series to a best-of-five format.

Chot Reyes: 'Calvin Abueva's antics won't get him to Gilas PH'

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said Calvin Abueva will have to change his attitude if he has hopes of joining the national team for the FIBA World Basketball Cup.

In an interview with SPIN, Reyes said he wasn’t pleased to see Abueva’s “nganga” gesture during Alaska’s quarterfinals with Barangay Ginebra.

"Isipin mo naman, dala mo ang bandila ng Pilipinas tapos makikita ka dun nagkakain-subo ka habang naglalaro ka," said Reyes.

Japeth Aguilar gets FIBA nod for alley-oop

Barangay Ginebra forward Japeth Aguilar is now the PBA’s leading scorer in the Philippine Cup and to add to his growing list of accolades, he was recently cited by FIBA for his throw-down as the best alley-oop play of 2013 in an on-line poll no doubt dominated by Filipino posts.
FIBA communications director Patrick Koller, writing from the federation head office in Mies, a Swiss border village near Geneva, alerted The Star on an article published in fiba.com about the 6-9 frontliner who scored 29 points against Alaska last Saturday to seize the top spot of the PBA scoring ladder with a 19.69 average.
