Calvin Abueva to represent Philippines in FIBA 3x3 World Tour

Alaska forward Calvin Abueva has been tapped to banner one of four teams representing the Philippines in the upcoming Manila Masters of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour on July 19 and 20 at the SM Megamall.
This was announced by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios during the press luncheon of the event on Tuesday.

Chot Reyes: 'Calvin Abueva's antics won't get him to Gilas PH'

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said Calvin Abueva will have to change his attitude if he has hopes of joining the national team for the FIBA World Basketball Cup.

In an interview with SPIN, Reyes said he wasn’t pleased to see Abueva’s “nganga” gesture during Alaska’s quarterfinals with Barangay Ginebra.

"Isipin mo naman, dala mo ang bandila ng Pilipinas tapos makikita ka dun nagkakain-subo ka habang naglalaro ka," said Reyes.

PBA chief to Calvin Abueva: Drop 'troubled ways' bring back 'the beast'

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Chito Salud has urged Calvin Abueva to drop his “troubled ways” and bring back “The Beast” that steered Alaska to the Commissioner’s Cup title.

Salud lamented that Abueva has been getting a lot of attention lately, not because of his God-given talents, but because of his involvement in controversies.

Just recently, the prized forward banged heads with Jared Dillinger while he contested the latter’s drive to the basket during the Meralco-Alaska game.

Jared Dillinger says no hard feelings after scuffle with Calvin Abueva

That’s how Meralco star Jared Dillinger described to InterAksyon.com the scuffle involving him and Calvin Abueva in the fourth quarter of the Bolts’ win over Alaska on Friday.
Dillinger had his nose bloodied after getting caught by Abueva on a drive.

Tempers flared in the fourth quarter of Friday’s match between the Alaska Aces and the Meralco Bolts when Calvin Abueva was involved in a scuffle with Jared Dillinger at the 10:11 mark of the fourth quarter.
The incident began after Abueva challenged Dillinger on a drive to the basket. The two remained tangled as they fell toward the baseline, with Abueva appearing to hit Dillinger and dragging the Bolts forward along with him.

Calvin Abueva greeted by boos while receiving Rookie award

EVEN in his shining moment, Calvin 'The Beast' Abueva heard the boss.

Alaska's controversial freshman forward won Rookie of the Year honors on Friday night but was greeted by boos from the pro-Petron gallery during the PBA Annual Leo Awards at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The boos, however, were understandable since the league's individual awards were held before Game Four of the Governors Cup Finals between San Mig and Petron.

Alaska forward Calvin Abueva won Rookie of the Year honors in the PBA’s Leo Awards on Friday, beating out a late challenge from Petron Blaze center June Mar Fajardo.

The brash Alaska rookie, the second overall pick in last year’s draft, made an immediate impact with the Aces despite joining the team late to finish his stint with San Sebastian in the NCAA. Abueva sparked the Aces to a surprise run to the semifinals of the Philippine Cup.

He was instrumental for Alaska as the Aces marched to the finals of the Commissioner’s Cup, where they swept Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in three games to win their first title in the post-Tim Cone era.

Widely known as a flopper and taunter, Alaska Aces forward Calvin Abueva said yesterday he’s misunderstood by fans who think he’s nothing more than a disrespectful showboat on the court.

Abueva, 25, stands 6-1 1/2 but on defense, he’s tapped to take on bigger players which is why he often resorts to playacting if only to call attention to the referees. 

“I can take the contact but sometimes, it’s too much and the referees still let it go,” he said in Pilipino.
