Former US national team captain Thomas Dooley appointed Azkals coach

A former captain of the United States national men’s football team will take over as the new coach of the Azkals, the squad announced on Friday.

Thomas Dooley, a German-American who led USA to its World Cup appearances in the 1990s, is expected to arrive in the Philippines next week to steer the Philippine team in their big tournaments this year. The development was announced on the Azkals’ official Twitter account.

Dooley, 52, had a decorated playing career as a defender, playing for German club FC Kaiserslautern which he helped won the German Cup in 1990 and the Bundesliga in 1991. He also clinched the title in the UEFA Cup, Europe’s top club competition, with Schalke 04 in 1997.

A member of the US National Soccer Hall of Fame, Dooley made his debut with the US national team in 1994 and became its captain in 1998. He appeared in 81 international matches with the squad and scored seven goals during his seven-year stint.

After retirement, Dooley had a couple of coaching stints with the US national team, serving as its assistant in 2011 and working as part of the US Under-20 national team staff last year.

He also took over lower-tier German club FC Saarbrucken for one year in 2002.

Dooley will replace former Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss who was booted out in January after a three-year stint with the team.

Dooley will have his baptism of fire on March 1 when the Azkals face Malaysia in a friendly match in Kuala Lumpur.

Under new coach Dooley, the Azkals have a few months to prepare before competing in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in May, where the tournament champion earns a ticket to the prestigious 2015 Asian Cup.
