UAAP 77: NU defeats FEU 75-59, wins first title in 60 years

The NU Bulldogs end a 60-year UAAP title-drought after outplaying the FEU Tamaraws, 75-59, in Game 3 of their Season 77 finals match Wednesday, October 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Bulldogs made the right plays in the final quarter to keep the Tamaraws at bay. Glenn Khobuntin hit a three-pointer and followed it up with an and-1 play to effectively put the fight away from FEU.
The Bulldogs erected a 14-point lead midway through the third quarter but FEU went on a 6-0 run to make it 49-41. That was when Jjay Alejandro made key plays to keep the Tamaraws at bay. Alejandro knocked down a triple and drove strong to the hoop to give NU

Alfred Aroga was a force in the paint for the NU Bulldogs. He manned the paint effectively on defense swatting shot after shot. He was also the focal point of some the Bulldogs' halfcourt sets. Aroga scored on and-1 plays in transition and putbacks to give NU the lead at halftime, 30-26.

Aroga was named Finals MVP after scoring 16 points on 47% field goal shooting to go along with 13 rebounds

FEU's Mike Tolomia was on fire to start the game hitting tough shot after tough to finish with 11 points in the opening period highlighted by his rebound and follow-up buzzer beater to end the quarter. But it was NU who held the lead at the end of the first quarter, 20-18.

Just when everyone thought a UAAP Finals series between Far Eastern University and National University couldn’t draw a big crowd, the two schools deliver to break attendance records once more.

After breaking the previous attendance record for a basketball game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Game 2, the series-deciding Game 3 of the UAAP Season 77 Finals set the bar high with its 25,118 gate attendance on Wednesday, October 15.

The two teams previously attracted 24,896 fans in Game 2 of the series where the Bulldogs bounced back from a Game 1 loss.

They surpassed the PBA record of 24,883 set in February during the semifinals Game 7 of the Philippine Cup between Barangay Ginebra and San Mig Coffee.

The raucous crowd from both schools was made up of students and alumni, including a notable National University alumnus in former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos. - Rappler.com
