2012 Solar Eclipse Video: Sun & Moon creates "Ring of Fire" effect

Solar Eclipse is a rare astronomical event and on Sunday, May 20 (Monday in Manila), the sun and moon aligned over the earth that dimmed the skies over parts of Asia and North America creating a blazing “ring of fire” effect.

Solar Eclipses occur almost every year but what happened on Sunday is called the annular solar eclipse wherein the sun and moon create a creepy awesome “ring of fire” effect. This kind of eclipse is rare and the last time that it occurred was wayback in 1994. According to scientists, the next one will occur in 2023 so that’s more than a decade from now.

NASA Space Scientist Jeffrey Newmark said an annular eclipse occurs when the moon’s orbit closer to the sun allowing it to block 90% of the sun rays leaving two orbs slide that makes it look like a “ring of fire.”

“It’s like moving your fist in front of your eyes, you can block out the view of a whole mountain. It’s the same kind of effect,” he said.

The countries who were able to witness the rare phenomenon were Japan, Hong Kong and other parts of Southern Asia, and the states of Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico in the US.

Although day did not turn into night as what happens in Total Eclipse, the light faded as the moon slid in front of the sun, with the so-called “ring of fire” spectacle lasting for about 4 minutes.
