It's Official: Lebanon out of FIBA Asia Championship

The Lebanon national men’s basketball team will miss the FIBA Asia Championship after the world basketball body affirmed the country’s suspension from competing internationally.

Lebanon FIBA Asia Championship 2013

FIBA has officially suspended the Lebanese Basketball Federation (FLB) because of legal troubles plaguing the local league as well as political disputes involving basketball stakeholders in the country.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, the ban will last four years.

The development comes as a big blow to Lebanon players, who flew to the Philippines this week to begin their training camp in preparation for the FIBA Asia Championship, which begins on August 1.

The team held out hope for a reversal of the suspension first reported last Friday, with FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian, a Lebanon national, hinting that the Lebanon may be allowed to play after all.

In a statement, the players said they “regret the decision by FIBA to suspend the Lebanese basketball.”

Lebanon has been tagged as a strong contender for one of the top three spots in the Asian championship, which serves as qualifier to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Taking the place of Lebanon in the competition will be United Arab Emirates, after Iraq begged off as a replacement because of lack of preparation.
