Already set to receive at least P1.5 million each from their benefactor and patron Manny V. Pangilinan, the members of the national team divide another P1 million to be given by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for its runner-up finish in the recent FIBA Asia Championship.

The Gilas team will be one of the recipients of the cash award from the PSC which will also give cash rewards to the medalists from the Asian Youth Games (AYG), Asian Indoor and Martial Arts and other tournaments overseas.

In all, the PSC plans to give away P2 million to those who brought honor to the Philippines in international competitions.

PSC executive director Guillermo Iroy said the gold medalists will get P75,000, while silver medalists will receive P50,000 and bronze medalists will pocket P25,000.

The cash rewards will be given on Saturday afternoon at the Philsports Arena with the PSC presiding over the affair alongside the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) which handled the formation and participation of these teams.

The awardees include AYG gold winners Mia Legaspi (golf) and Pauline Lopez (taekwondo) and silver medalists Princess Superal (golf), Francis Agojo (taekwondo) and Jurence Mendoza (tennis).

The Philippines wound up 12th overall in the 45-nation sportsfest that was staged for the second time and it landed fifth in the leaderboard among Southeast Asian nations.

For this feat, the POC has commended AYG chief of mission Tac Padilla during its board meeting yesterday for a job well done.

Other receiving cash awards are Cherry Clarice Parcon and Gerald Jamili (dancesports, gold), and Rubilen Amit (billiards, bronze), in the Asian Indoor in Incheon, South Korea

Medalists from wushu, taekwondo and boxing are also being rewarded for their exploits here and abroad.

The four gold medalists from boxing are Jade Bornea, Felix Marcial, Ian Clark Bautista and James Palicte, whose feats nearly toppled powerhouse Kazakhstan in the medal standings in the Asian Youth championships last March in Subic.
