Tim Cone excited to pick Wang Zhizhi's smaller version Ian Sangalang
An athletic left-handed center with great footwork, a solid post game, and a nice outside touch, San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone knows exactly who Ian Sangalang reminds him of.
“He’s like a smaller version of Wang Zhizhi, who’s a lefty as well,” Cone told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.
Wang, the first Chinese player to play in the NBA, is a familiar figure among Filipino fans with his frequent trips to the country playing for the China basketball team. He was here last August as part of the Chinese squad that competed in the FIBA Asia Championship.
Sangalang is much smaller, but he is talented enough that Cone considers him a no-brainer choice for the team in Sunday’s PBA draft.
“We’re pretty locked-in to getting Sangalang at No. 2,” said Cone, whose only choices came down to Sangalang and 7-foot center Greg Slaughter.
“I think Slaughter is pretty much locked-in for Ginebra and he’s already practicing with them.”
Cone doesn’t think of the former San Sebastian center, a Most Valuable Player winner in the NCAA and the PBA D-League, as a consolation prize.
“We’re very happy with Sangalang. Slaughter has a tremendous future and he’s gonna be a dominant player, I think more on the defensive end. He’ll be an absolute dominant player,” said Cone.
“Sangalang is a great two-way player. He can play both sides of the floor. He’s gonna fit our triangle and the way we’ve been going in and out, playing the perimeter. He’s gonna help us.”
