Batang Gilas defeats Malaysia, to face Chinese Taipei in FIBA Asia U-18 quarters

The Philippine national youth team turned back a tough challenge from Southeast Asian rival Malaysia, 72-69, to close the second round of the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship on Sunday (Monday morning PHL time) in Doha, Qatar.

San Beda Red Cubs guard Joshua Caracut nailed the game-winning three-pointer with 24 seconds left to give the Philippines the hard-earned win.

The win gave Batang Gilas the third seed in Group E, putting them on a collision course with Chinese Taipei in the knockout quarterfinals.

Batang Gilas had to first contend with a tenacious Malaysia side that had already scored a major upset over Qatar earlier in the tournament.

Malaysia opened the game on fire, taking a 19-12 lead over Batang Gilas after the opening period.

The Philippines remained in striking distance throughout the game, but was seemingly unable to get over the hump before tying the game at the end of the third period, 51-all.

The game remained tight the rest of the way before Caracut broke the game's final deadlock.

Malaysia had a chance to equalize, but multiple attempts from Joon Lock Wee could not find the target, allowing the Philippines to escape.
