PBA throws out Rain or Shine protest; Ginebra win stands

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s controversial victory over Rain or Shine on Saturday night will stand after the PBA threw out the Elasto Painters’ protest.

League commissioner Chito Salud addressed the issue on Sunday, saying Rain or Shine management failed to file the protest before the 12 noon deadline, deeming it invalid.

“The result of the Ginebra-Rain or Shine game stands,” said Salud.

The Gin Kings won over the Elasto Painters, 101-100, on Saturday night after referees called a late foul on Beau Belga to give Mac Baracael three free throw attempts. Baracael made all three shots, making up the marginal point.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao blasted the foul called by referee Nol Quilingen, saying there should have been no call. Guiao added that there should have been more time left on the clock after the call, as referees left just three-tenths of a second after the whistle.

But Salud said review showed that Quilingen made the right decision.

“The call that was made by the referee on Belga to Baracael was correct,” said Salud, while also addressing Rain or Shine’s contention about the time left.

“The time will only stop at the point of the whistle, not at the point of the contact.”
