Philippine Azkals reach new all-time high in FIFA World Rankings

The Philippines moved up once again to its all-time high in the FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday.

The Azkals moved from 137th to 133rd to climb six four notches up in the world football ladder, marking the fifth time that they set a historic high this year. Four other countries reached their highest position in the rankings, namely Armenia (34th), Venezuela (35th), Afghanistan (129th) and Guam (169th).

The Philippines remained as the best squad in Southeast Asia ahead of Myanmar (140th), Thailand (142nd) and Singapore (154th). Vietnam, which topped the region for some time, dropped seven places to settle for a tie with Malaysia (158th).

The Filipinos got a boost in the rankings after forcing a 1-1 draw against the 148th-ranked India during their training tour this month, which also included a 4-nil loss against the 71st-ranked United Arab Emirates.

Iran overtook Japan on top of Asia, with South Korea, Australia and Uzbekistan completing the top five.

Spain continued its reign at the helm of the rankings, followed by Germany, Argentina, Colombia and Portugal.

World governing football body FIFA calculates every country’s ranking based on match results (a win, a loss or a draw), its importance (i.e. a friendly or a World Cup match), and the strength of the nation’s opponent ranking-wise. These points are then accumulated from the country’s past results in the previous four years.
