Mark Caguioa tags Emman Monfort as 'Mini-Spark' (VIDEO)

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is renowned for having the tallest frontline in the league.

But on Sunday, confounded by the zone defense sprung by Barako Bull, the Gin Kings needed a boost from the smallest player in the league — Emman Monfort.

Ginebra was down by 10 points, 70-60, before Monfort’s three-pointer started the Gin Kings rally for a 90-83 victory.

“When they played zone defense medyo dun na-rattle kami because we weren’t hitting our shots,” said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin.

“Sinuwerte at naging aggressive kami pagpasok ni Emman Monfort.”

Monfort was back on the bench to end the game, as the rest of the Gin Kings put the finishing touches on the win.

Television cameras showed the Ginebra bench celebrating, with Gin Kings superstar Mark Caguioa giving Monfort a hug and a lift.

“I would call that ‘Mini-Spark,” Caguioa told InterAksyon.com, praising Monfort’s efforts.

“When he’s in there, parang he changes the game. More intensity, more defense, he provided us a different look in the game. He does things not just in one game, but he does it everytime that he’s in there.”

Even Monfort’s numbers — six points in eight minutes — do not tell the whole story, according to Caguioa.

“Mahirap yung ginagawa niya kasi sometimes he’s not playing in the first, second quarter, and then next thing you know bigla na lang siya papasok,” said Caguioa. “That’s a hard thing to do.”

But Monfort cherishes his role with the Gin Kings.

“Kung ano yung nakita kong kulang yun ang ibibigay ko sa team. Nagkataon lang na yung three-point shot ko yung nag-start ng rally pero it’s a team effort so collectively tinapos ng mga teammates ko yung laro para manalo,” said Monfort.

The smallest man in the league doesn’t see the limited minutes given to him as a problem, instead making the most out of the playing time.

“Kailangan ibigay mo yung best mo sa bawat moment na binibigyan ka ng pagkakataon. I feel inspired sa mga tao who use me as inspiration,” said Monfort.
