Mark Caguioa blasts teammates in Ginebra after quarterfinals ouster

Ginebra star Mark Caguioa pulled no punches as he lambasted his teammates after the Gin Kings were eliminated in the PBA Commissioners Cup quarter-finals by the top-seeded Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters Tuesday night.
Ginebra’s Commissioners Cup campaign ended on a brutal note as they were routed by TNT, 97-84, allowing the Texters to advance to the semi-finals. Caguioa scored 19 points in a losing effort.

Early Wednesday morning, Caguioa hit out at his teammates for their "soft and lazy" play, claiming that not even a legendary NBA coach could have brought such a team to the PBA semi-finals.

Mark Caguioa tags Emman Monfort as 'Mini-Spark' (VIDEO)

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is renowned for having the tallest frontline in the league.

But on Sunday, confounded by the zone defense sprung by Barako Bull, the Gin Kings needed a boost from the smallest player in the league — Emman Monfort.

Ginebra was down by 10 points, 70-60, before Monfort’s three-pointer started the Gin Kings rally for a 90-83 victory.

“When they played zone defense medyo dun na-rattle kami because we weren’t hitting our shots,” said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin.

WITH Barangay Ginebra fighting for position as the playoffs draw near, superstar Mark Caguioa said he can no longer afford to go on a shooting funk like he did against San Mig Coffee a couple of games ago.

“I just can’t shoot for 0-of-11,” Caguioa told SPIN as he recalled his awful shooting performance in an 86-89 loss to San Mig last September 8. “That was just my main thing, I mean, I’m not that type of player (who’ll just shoot woefully).

Mark Caguioa lashes out at referees: "Parang bulag talaga"

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel superstar Mark Caguioa was in a foul mood on Sunday night moments after his Gin Kings’ 102-99 loss to the Alaska Aces at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Mark Caguioa lashes out at referees: "Parang bulag talaga"

The target of his ire? The referees, who according to Caguioa missed several crucial calls, including what he says should have been a foul in his final attempt to tie the game.

“Makikita mo na parang bulag talaga dahil hindi nila nakita yung travelling ni (Alaska import) McKines nung huli. Hindi nila nakita yun then hindi rin nila nakita yung foul,” Caguioa told sportswriters.

Mark Caguioa, Paul Lee, Vernon Macklin in Gilas Pilipinas ?

The success of Gilas Pilipinas also opened the door for me to imagine other versions of the team with a clear conscience during my next flight, the 14-hour jaunt from Seoul to New York.

Mark Caguioa, Paul Lee, Vernon Macklin in Gilas Pilipinas ?

That’s because we know what the “right” version of the national team was — it was the group that qualified for a FIBA World Cup for the first time since 1978 and had the nation crying tears of joy. So instead, I could entertain myself by imagining strange, themed versions of the Philippine team. Hey, it was either that or watch Sylvester Stallone’s “Bullet to the Head” seven consecutive times.

Mark Caguioa Welcomes LA Tenorio To Ginebra San Miguel

Superstar guard Mark Caguioa has welcomed LA Tenorio to Ginebra San Miguel with open arms, but he doesn’t see it as a sign that bosom buddy Jayjay Helterbrand is on his way out.

“LA is a real competitor, he has leadership quality and can set direction inside the court,” said Caguioa, adding that it is an opportunity for Helterbrand to show what he’s still got.

“I see LA’s inclusion as a big challenge for him (Helterbrand). I’m sure everyone will be felt challenged when someone is about to take your spot.”
