Batang Gilas defeat Kazakhstan; to battle Japan for fifth place in FIBA Asia U-18

The Philippine national youth basketball team warded off Kazakhstan to grab an 86-74 victory in the classification round of the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships Wednesday at the Al-Gharafa Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Paul Desiderio led the Batang Gilas charge with 19 points as the Filipinos have the chance to finish as high as fifth in the tournament after getting knocked out of the quarterfinals last Tuesday.

The Filipinos took control of the entire game, starting things off with an 8-0 blast before pushing their cushion to as much as 16 points, 54-38, at halftime.

Kazakhstan stayed within striking distance and inched to as close as five points in the fourth quarter. But Batang Gilas had an answer to every Kazakhstan surge to cruise to the victory.

Radge Tongco added 13 points, while Jolo Go, Mark Dyke and Kobe Paras each had 10 markers for a balanced attack for the Filipinos.

Batang Gilas will next face Japan in the battle for fifth place.
