Import Josh Powell leaving Ginebra to sign with Houston Rockets

After two games, former Los Angeles Lakers big man Josh Powell is leaving Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Team executive Robert Non said that Powell has asked permission to allow him to sign with the Houston Rockets in the NBA. The Rockets are currently holding the fourth seed in the Western Conference standings.

“Kasi if ever makukuha niya yung offer sa Houston Rockets, it will be considered as one year, which will be counted to his pension,” Non told a small group of sportswriters.

SMC denies blocking Greg Slaughter, Mario Lassiter from Gilas

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) denied any involvement in the decision of their two players to pass up the chance to join Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

SMC chief of basketball operations, Robert Non, said that they even encouraged Greg Slaughter to join the national training pool.

Slaughter, who plays for Barangay Ginebra, and San Miguel Beer’s Mario Lassiter recently announced that they are pulling out of the Gilas training pool.

Ginebra taps veteran wingman Leon Rodgers for PBA Commissioner’s Cup

With last year’s import Vernon Macklin unavailable to suit up because of the 6-foot-9 height limit for the Commissioner’s Cup, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has tapped a veteran to lead the team for the tournament.

The Gin Kings have signed 33-year-old Leon Rodgers, according to the import’s agent Sheryl Reyes.
Rodgers is scheduled to come to the Philippines on February 24 as the swingman is currently playing in China until February 16.

PBA: Ginebra vs San Mig Coffee (Semis Game 4) REPLAY VIDEO

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel squandered a 16-point third quarter lead before eking out an 85-82 over the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers on Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings looked on pace for the easy victory after opening up a 70-54 spread after a Jayjay Helterbrand three-pointer near the end of the third period.

But the Mixers came roaring back, scoring the next 18 points of the game behind James Yap, Mark Barroca, and Justin Melton to take a 72-70 edge.

San Mig Coffee continued the onslaught, taking a 76-72 advantage. But a banked three-pointer by Emman Monfort sparked an 8-4 run that gave Ginebra back the advantage, 80-78.

Japeth Aguilar gets FIBA nod for alley-oop

Barangay Ginebra forward Japeth Aguilar is now the PBA’s leading scorer in the Philippine Cup and to add to his growing list of accolades, he was recently cited by FIBA for his throw-down as the best alley-oop play of 2013 in an on-line poll no doubt dominated by Filipino posts.
FIBA communications director Patrick Koller, writing from the federation head office in Mies, a Swiss border village near Geneva, alerted The Star on an article published in fiba.com about the 6-9 frontliner who scored 29 points against Alaska last Saturday to seize the top spot of the PBA scoring ladder with a 19.69 average.

Now that Barangay Ginebra has some of the best talents in the league, it’s time for the team to prove its strength in the hardcourt.

Ginebra board representative Robert Non admitted having already assembled a formidable lineup following the acquisition of top pick Greg Slaughter, No. 4 pick James Forrester, JayR Reyes and Emman Monfort.

Now, the team will have to work on its chemistry to become a force in the upcoming PBA Philippine Cup, which opens on Sunday.

Greg Slaughter vows not to let Barangay Ginebra fans down


"Surreal." That was how Greg Slaughter felt after he was taken by the crowd favorites Barangay Ginebra Kings with the number one pick of the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft last Sunday.

The seven-footer was joined by his new teammates – including All-Star guards LA Tenorio and Mark Caguioa – at the stage while thousands of fans at the Robinsons Place Manila chanted “Gi-Ne-Bra!”

“Surreal, that’s all I can say right now,” said Slaughter. “I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

HOURS after dropping by Barangay Ginebra's practice on Friday, Greg Slaughter made no effort to hide where he wants to end up in the PBA rookie draft on November 3.

“If I end up in Ginebra, I can’t ask for anything more than that,” said the Cebuano seven-footer, the prospective No. 1 pick in the rookie draft where the Gin Kings happen to own the top selection overall.
