Import Josh Powell leaving Ginebra to sign with Houston Rockets

After two games, former Los Angeles Lakers big man Josh Powell is leaving Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Team executive Robert Non said that Powell has asked permission to allow him to sign with the Houston Rockets in the NBA. The Rockets are currently holding the fourth seed in the Western Conference standings.

“Kasi if ever makukuha niya yung offer sa Houston Rockets, it will be considered as one year, which will be counted to his pension,” Non told a small group of sportswriters.

Powell played just 15 minutes in the Gin Kings’ loss to Alaska on Sunday while reportedly nursing a foot injury.

According to Non, Powell is scheduled to leave on Tuesday night.

Despite being assured a playoff spot, Ginebra is in a precarious position at eighth place in the standings. If the playoffs started today, the Gin Kings would have twice-to-win disadvantage in the quarterfinals.

Non said the team is eyeing a couple of prospects to replace Powell.

Former NBA player Andre Emmett tops the list of prospects of the Gin Kings.

Listed at 6-foot-5, Emmett played for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2004-05 and the New Jersey Nets in 2011-12. He also had stints in Belgium where he emerged as the best scorer (23.9) in the Belgian championship in 2007-08 season.

He spent the last two seasons in Lebanon.

The other candidate is Charles Thomas, listed 6-foot-8, and currently playing in Lebanon.

Of the two, Non considers Emmett the better option since he could also be eligible for to reinforce the team in the Governors’ Cup, which has a 6-foot-5 height limit.
