Globe commits to GSMA mEducation initiative in the Philippines

Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom shares its nine-year Text2Teach mobile education initiative with GSMA, an organization of some 800 mobile operators in over 220 countries worldwide which is conducting a week-long visit in the Philippines to discuss mEducation opportunities particularly in underserved areas with limited connectivity. 
During the GSMA workshop, Globe presented information on its education-related activities and areas where the company can make further contributions. The workshop also tackles insights and future possibilities in the area of mEducation both in global and local education context as well as the challenges, needs, and areas where mobile might be a part of.

Globe Telecom signs mEducation MoU with DepEd, TESDA

Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom throws its support to the mEducation initiative of GSM Association as it signed a joint collaboration agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and other industry players to bring education opportunities to over six million out-of-school youth in the country.
“This is something that clearly requires the effort of everybody and we believe that this collaboration to explore and pursue mobile education programs has a great potential to impact more disadvantaged Filipino youth,” said Gil B. Genio, Head of Globe Corporate Strategy and Business Development in a speech delivered during the Memorandum of Understanding signing activity at Makati Shangri-la Hotel.

Globe sets up Libreng Tawag centers for Cebu ferry victims

In quick response to Friday evening’s Cebu ferry disaster where a number of people died and over a hundred still unaccounted for, Globe Telecom immediately sets up two Libreng Tawag centers which victims and families of those affected can use to establish communications with their friends and kins.

The first Libreng Tawag site is at the Pier 4 Terminal in Port Area where about 300 survivors are staying while the second Libreng Tawag center is in Sugbutel, one of the two hostels which house the other survivors.

Globe Telecom gains nearly 2 million prepaid subscribers in Q1 2013

Globe Telecom continues to strengthen its share in the prepaid market as it gained more prepaid subscribers in the first quarter of 2013 amidst the aggressive acquisition strategies of its competitors. 


The Ayala-led telco added over 506,000 subscribers during the period for its Globe Prepaid brand, up 32% and 71% from last year and last quarter, respectively. This brought year-to-date Globe Prepaid subscribers to about 16.9 million, 7% higher than last year’s 15.8 million and 3% above previous quarter’s 16.4 million.

Known for innovative and ground-breaking products and services, Globe Telecom recently launched Globe DUO Korea, an international inbound calling offer for Koreans in the Philippines.

Globe security team, Joint police arrests 5 WIMAX modems fraudster

Two separate buy-bust operations conducted by a joint police and Globe Telecom security team resulted in the arrest of five people involved in the illegal sale of WIMAX modems in the provinces of Laguna and Cavite.

In both instances, the modus operandi is to pull-out the WIMAX modem from legitimate subscribers on pretext of an upgrade. The modems are then reconfigured and sold at a one-time cost payment. 

In the first buy-bust operation, Jose Narcida, a resident of Moonwalk Village in Las Pinas City, is alleged to be behind such illegal activity. Following numerous reports of illegal pull-out of Globe WIMAX modems, a joint team from Globe Security, Anti-Fraud and Investigation division and police personnel conducted an entrapment operation last April 15 where Reynald Denapo of Dasmarinas, Cavite was arrested. He was caught in possession of a Globe WIMAX modem he was offering for sale in the amount of PHP3,500.
