Rajko Toroman says Gilas Pilipinas can beat China
Former Philippine national team coach Rajko Toroman believes Gilas Pilipinas has a chance in beating an injury-plagued China team in the FIBA Asia Championship 2013.
Toroman said that if the Nationals play just like they did against Japan, it is possible that they could defeat the once formidable Chinese squad.
“How Gilas played against Japan was very impressive. Even if we play China the mission of beating them will be very possible. The Chinese are struggling,” the Serbian coach said in a Spin.ph report by Snow Badua.
The defending champions looked vulnerable in this year’s FIBA Asia Championship as it lost to Iran and South Korea in the first round. The Chinese team even struggled before beating Kazakhstan in the second round.
On the other hand, Gilas Pilipinas, which lost to Chinese Taipei, came back with a vengeance and shut out Japan’s scorers for a 90-71 win.
“The boys were looking very good. They didn’t give any opportunity to Japan especially how they closed out the outside shooters of Japan,” said Toroman.
“Again, if the Philippines play like how they played against Japan, they have a very, very big chance against China in the quarterfinals,” he added.
