LA Tenorio still dreaming of MVP award despite early Ginebra exit
LA Tenorio plunged straight into action for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the Governors’ Cup without taking a break after helping Gilas Pilipinas win a silver medal in the FIBA Asia Championship.
With the Gin Kings’ campaign coming to an end, Tenorio is finally getting a well-deserved break.
Despite Ginebra’s early exit, the cerebral point guard remains one of the top contenders for the season’s Most Valuable Player award. An automatic nominee after winning Best Player of the Conference in the Commissioner’s Cup, he has stepped up his game in this tournament, playing a string of stellar games that helped boost his case.
For Tenorio, who just finished his first season with Ginebra, winning the league’s top individual honor remains a dream.
“Of course, I’m still hoping,” Tenorio said when asked by InterAKTV about his MVP chances. “Sayang kasi kung ibibigay naman sa akin, to get that award, why not? Kung may iba namang deserving to get that award, then we’ll see. Maybe next time.”
Ginebra has had a roller coaster season, making it out of the quarterfinals just once in three tournaments. But Tenorio was brilliant in the Commissioner’s Cup, carrying a team that had lost Mark Caguioa to injury to a run to the championship.
He was even better in the Governors’ Cup, averaging 14.7 points, 9.2 assists, and 6.2 rebounds in 10 games.
“I’m still hoping kasi sayang rin. I believe this is the season wherein I’ve been consistent despite injuries coming from FIBA. Pinaghirapan ko rin eh. We’ll see,” said Tenorio.
Long vacation
Playing without rest since the grueling FIBA Asia tournament, Tenorio has asked Ginebra management for extra time off before the start of the team’s buildup for next season.
“The team will go back October 7 for the first practice. We’ll start early,” said Tenorio.
“But nagpaalam ako. Pahinga muna siguro ako mga three to four weeks. I think bibigyan naman nila ako na ganoong pahinga.
“Dito lang siguro ako magpapahinga kasi pregnant rin yung wife ko (second baby) so kailangan ko rin bantayan. December kasi yung due niya.”
