2014 FIBA Asia Cup Draw Results: Gilas Pilipinas in Group B; Iran in Group A

Reigning FIBA Asia Championship winners and defending champions Iran were drawn alongside hosts China in Group A, while Philippines and Jordan teams finishing runners-up in the last two FIBA Asia Championships were drawn in Group B as the draw for the 5th FIBA Asia Cup to be played in Wuhan (China) from July 11-19 was completed at the host city on Sunday.
East Asia’s Japan along with South Asia champions India and South East Asia’s Indonesia join Iran and China in Group A.

Philippines (Gilas Pilipinas) and Jordan will be joined by South East Asia champions Singapore, 27th FIBA Asia Championship semifinalists Chinese Taipei and Central Asia’s Uzbekistan in Group B.

“The draw promises some great competition,” said FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian who supervised the Draw Ceremony in Wuhan.

“Hosting a FIBA Asia event is not new for Wuhan and we look forward to another great event,” he said referring Wuhan’s successful hosting of the 26th FIBA Asia Championship in 2011.

“The 5th FIBA Asia Cup is an exciting prospect. A mere look at the participating teams is proof for that,” Khajirian said.

“Four out of the top five teams of last year’s 27th FIBA Asia Championship will be seen in action in the 5th FIBA Asia Cup. Three of those made it to the semifinals and two of them went on to play the Finals and become deserving representatives of FIBA Asia at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be played in Spain from Aug 30-Sept 14.

“The 5th FIBA Asia Cup therefore is training ground for Iran and Philippines who are heading to Spain. The 5th FIBA Asia Cup is also the training ground for all other teams who are aiming to make a mark in next year’s FIBA Asia Championship.”

Khajirian also thanked the FIBA Asia marketing and TV partners adding that “FIBA Asia looks forward earnestly to their continued support.”

System of Competition
The 10 teams are pooled into two groups of five teams each for the Preliminary Round. Each team will play all the others in their respective Groups. The top four from each Group will advance to the Quarterfinal Play-offs. The teams finishing fifth in the groups will play off for the 9th place.

About 5th FIBA Asia Cup

The winners of the 5th FIBA Asia Cup will automatically qualify for the 28th FIBA Asia Championship in 2015. The top teams at the 5th FIBA Asia Cup will earn additional berths for their respective FIBA Asia sub zones.
