Jones was pushed hard by Cormier, with whom he engaged in a bitter verbal tussle in the lead-up to the fight, but ended up retaining his belt after winning a unanimous decision.
All three judges scored the bout 49-46 in favor of Jones, who won for the 12th consecutive time and improved to 21-1 in his career. It was his eighth defense of the light-heavyweight belt.

Cormier, meanwhile, lost for the first time in his career and saw his record drop to 15-1.

Jones and Cormier split the first two rounds, with the challenger out-landing "Bones" in the second round and blocking the champion's kicks.

Jones took control of the next two rounds, however, as he managed to take down Cormier and pin him against the cage.

Cormier was finally able to slam Jones in the fifth and final round, but was unable to take advantage, and Jones wound up getting the better of their exchanges again.

There was no embrace between the two fighters after the results was announced, which may have been expected after all the heated exchanges between the two in the lead-up to their match.

"He's only human," said Jones, as quoted by UFC.com, of Cormier. "All the crap he talked, it motivated me. Sorry I'm being classless right now. I don't like DC (Cormier)."

In the undercard, lightweight contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone won for the sixth consecutive time by beating Myles Jury via unanimous decision.

Cerrone dominated Jury, with all three judges scoring the bout 30-27. "Cowboy" was unable to get a finish, however, and had to settle with firing a series of leg kicks at the end of the bout to punctuate his performance.
