Chot Reyes sees better finish for Gilas PH in FIBA Asia Championship
When the FIBA Asia Championship tips off on Thursday, Chot Reyes will become the first coach to lead a PBA-backed national team in a major tournament for a second time since the pro league started lending its players in 1990.
Former coaches Robert Jaworski, Norman Black, Tim Cone, Jong Uichico, and Yeng Guiao called the shots for the national team in one tournament apiece.
Malaysian player died en route to FIBA Asia Championship
The Malaysian national basketball team will carry tragedy into the FIBA Asia Championship, after one of their roster, 25-year-old Jack Ng Kiat Kee, passed away in China on Sunday, Malaysia's national news agency Bernama, reported.
The 6'5" center collapsed on the bench while playing in an invitational tournament, as part of the country's preparations for the regional tiff, Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) secretary-general Chey Tat Woon confirmed to Bernama.

Iran coach: We are going to win FIBA Asia Championship
Iran has won two of the last three FIBA Asia Championship tournaments, and coach Memi Becirovic is not bashful about his team’s chances in the 2013 edition of the competition.
“We are going to win the title but five or six other teams want to do that,” the Slovenian coach told the Tehran Times before the team’s departure for Manila on Sunday.
PBA coaches: Gilas PH needs adjustments for FIBA Asia Championship

Kazakhstan coach: Gilas PH strong title contender for FIBA Asia Championship
Kazakhstan coach Matteo Boniciolli became the first coach of a team competing in the FIBA Asia Championship 2013 to get a close look at the Philippine national men’s basketball team in a tuneup match on Friday night. (watch game replay here)
The Italian coach was impressed by Gilas Pilipinas, even going so far as to call the team a contender for the Asian title.

Iran, China tallest teams in FIBA Asia Championship; Gilas in 7th
Is height truly might? China and Iran, tabbed by observers as the top contenders for the title in the FIBA Asia Championship, boast of the tallest lineups in the tournament when it comes to listed heights.
According to a post on the tournament’s official website, the defending champion Chinese team, bannered by three 7-footers including former NBA forward Yi Jianlian, boast of an average height of 201.92cm, or about 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Gilas Pilipinas confident about FIBA Asia Championship
With two international training trips under its belt, the Philippine national men’s basketball team is confident heading into the FIBA Asia Championship on August 1.
“I think we made a lot of positive steps and we are closer to being ready today than we were a month ago,” said Rain or Shine forward Gabe Norwood, a veteran international campaigner who also represented the Philippines in 2007 and 2009.

FIBA unable to find replacement for Lebanon in Championship Cup
With the FIBA ban on Lebanon now official, the 27th FIBA Asia Championship field is down to 15 teams.
“We tried our best to find a replacement team, but given the short period of time available we couldn’t find any,” said FIBA Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian on Friday.

Lebanon out of FIBA Asia Championship due to FIBA suspension
The field in the FIBA Asia Championship got a little easier after the ouster of powerhouse Lebanon, following a decision by FIBA to suspend the country’s basketball federation.
A report by The Daily Star Lebanon said the international basketball body confirmed its suspension Lebanon after it failed to meet requirements set by FIBA.
The world basketball federation earlier gave Lebanon a deadline to take steps about a number of violations, which include political meddling in matches as well as legal disputes between teams and players.

Gilas Pilipinas ‘Final 12’ for FIBA Asia Championship announced
In the end, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes opted to go to war with his "original 12."
Reyes bared on Thursday his final 12 for the FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship with the latest addition to the national pool, Beau Belga, being the odd man out.
Reyes commended Belga for being the "ultimate professional."

Chot Reyes to announce Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup on Thursday
Chot Reyes hasn’t made up his mind on the final composition of the Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup.
With only 13 of them leaving with him for the 10-day training camp in New Zealand, Reyes is having a hard time choosing who to drop from the lineup to the reserved list.
It’s practically the same players, who went in Lithuania for a two-week training camp last month.
Gilas’ toughest team to beat is Chinese Taipei, not Jordan
Chinese Taipei figures to be a tough early test for the Philippine national men’s basketball team early in the FIBA Asia Championship, according to international basketball veteran Rajko Toroman.
According to the Serbian coach who currently serves as consultant to Barako Bull in the PBA, the Taiwanese have become more formidable following the inclusion of naturalized center Quincy Davis in the lineup.

FIBA Asia Championship 2013: Complete Preliminary Round Schedule
The schedule of games for the Preliminary Round competition at the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila,Philippines from August 1-11, 2013 has been announced.
Reigning champions China will take on fellow East Asian team arch rivals Korea, with Jordan the silver medalists of the last edition at the 26th FIBA Asia Championship at Wuhan (China) in 2011 lining up against Chinese Taipei on the opening day of the competition.
