Iran, China tallest teams in FIBA Asia Championship; Gilas in 7th

Is height truly might? China and Iran, tabbed by observers as the top contenders for the title in the FIBA Asia Championship, boast of the tallest lineups in the tournament when it comes to listed heights.

According to a post on the tournament’s official website, the defending champion Chinese team, bannered by three 7-footers including former NBA forward Yi Jianlian, boast of an average height of 201.92cm, or about 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Gilas Pilipinas ‘Final 12’ for FIBA Asia Championship announced

In the end, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes opted to go to war with his "original 12."


Reyes bared on Thursday his final 12 for the FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship with the latest addition to the national pool, Beau Belga, being the odd man out.

Reyes commended Belga for being the "ultimate professional."

Chot Reyes to announce Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup on Thursday

Chot Reyes hasn’t made up his mind on the final composition of the Gilas Pilipinas 12-man lineup.


With only 13 of them leaving with him for the 10-day training camp in New Zealand, Reyes is having a hard time choosing who to drop from the lineup to the reserved list.

It’s practically the same players, who went in Lithuania for a two-week training camp last month.

Gilas’ toughest team to beat is Chinese Taipei, not Jordan

Chinese Taipei figures to be a tough early test for the Philippine national men’s basketball team early in the FIBA Asia Championship, according to international basketball veteran Rajko Toroman.


According to the Serbian coach who currently serves as consultant to Barako Bull in the PBA, the Taiwanese have become more formidable following the inclusion of naturalized center Quincy Davis in the lineup.

Philippines almost ready to host FIBA Asia Championship in August

The Philippines has been pronounced ready for the hosting of the FIBA Asia championship a little less than three months before the games begin on August 1.


Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas deputy executive director Bernie Atienza announced in last Friday’s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session that his association headed by president Manuel V. Pangilinan is 90 percent ready to stage the 16-nation tournament that serves as the qualifying for the 2014 FIBA World Cup set in Spain.

FYI: How the FIBA Asia Championship tournament format works

On Thursday, the draw for the FIBA Asia Championship in August was set, with the Philippines choosing to be part of Group A.


The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team is bracketed in Group A in the preliminary round, joining Chinese Taipei, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

The country chose to be in Group A after a consultation with SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes, who monitored the proceedings from Lithuania.

Gilas Pilipinas to use its privilege as a host in FIBA-Asia draw

THE first step in the bid of Gilas Pilipinas to qualify for next year’s World Basketball Championship takes place on Thursday when the 16-team draw for the groupings of the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship is held at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel.


As host, the Philippines is expected to make full use of its privilege of picking 13th in the draw, which means the first 12 slots will already be filled by the time Gilas chooses the best group to join.

Calvin Abueva to replace Ryan Reyes on Gilas Pilipinas line-up

GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has confirmed that Talk ‘N Text guard Ryan Reyes won’t be able to join the team in its two-week training camp in Lithuania, deepening the injury woes of a team even before it could begin the final phase of its preparation for the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship.


Reyes, the Texters' top lock-down defender, has been nursing a hamstring injury that is slow to heal as he joins Sonny Thoss, Kelly Williams and Jared Dillinger on the list of players who won’t make it to the Lithuania camp set on June 2-16 in the Baltic resort town of Palanga.

Gilas Pilipinas vs Shanghai Sharks Full Game Video Replay

GILAS PILIPINAS engineered a second quarter breakaway and then survived a late fightback by Shanghai Sharks to prevail, 80-72, in the first of two featured matches in the Philippines-China Friendship Games Monday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Yao Ming's advice to Gilas Pilipinas: "Beat China"

"Beat China." This was the advice given by former NBA star Yao Ming to the Philippine national basketball team, Smart Gilas Pilipinas, seeking an end to the decades-long World Championship and Olympic drought.

The 7-foot-6 Yao, who played nine meaningful seasons with the Houston Rockets in the NBA, including the last few years where he was hobbled by various injuries, then withheld from giving more tips, saying it will end up spilling the beans to China's secret to success.

Smart-Gilas Philippines vs Shanghai Sharks Live Streaming

Philippine national men’s basketball coach Chot Reyes will tap members of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas cadet pool to join PBA players when the squad takes on the Shanghai Sharks.


The Philippines will play the Sharks, a Chinese Basketball Association club co-owned by former NBA star Yao Ming, in exhibition matches on May 6 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and on May 7 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Members of the senior pool from PBA clubs that are no longer in contention in the Commissioner’s Cup will banner the squad. Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan of Rain or Shine, Gary David and Japeth Aguilar of GlobalPort, and June Mar Fajardo of Petron will be joined by senior pool members Marcus Douthit and Greg Slaughter.

Rain or Shine forward Jeff Chan nailed a three-pointer with six-tenths of a second remaining as the Philippine national men’s basketball team battled a crack selection of PBA stars to a 124-all tie in the league’s annual All-Star game Sunday in Digos City.


The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas squad battled back from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to force the tie in what was the first public appearance of the latest incarnation of the national team.

The PBA All-Stars promised to provide a challenge for the Gilas team preparing for the FIBA Asia Championship, and they made good on it. Arwind Santos, who won co-Most Valuable Player honors for the game, led the selection to a hot 9-2 start to begin the game.

Denzel Bowles or Michael Dunigan as Gilas' Next Naturalized Player ?

NO less than the leadership of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and a prominent lawmaker who’s been an ardent supporter of the sport are backing national coach Chot Reyes if he decides to have either Michael Dunigan or Denzel Bowles as Gilas' next naturalized player.


SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan said he’s leaving it all up to Reyes on who he has in mind as candidate for naturalization, a move Antipolo congressman Robbie Puno said he’ll definitely push again at the House of Representative.

SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national coach Chot Reyes has named his lineup that will go to battle in the FIBA Asia Championship in August.


Joining naturalized center Marcus Douthit on the team are Jayson Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Larry Fonacier, Ranidel De Ocampo, Ryan Reyes, Jared Dillinger, and Kelly Williams of three-time Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text; Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine; Gary David and Japeth Aguilar of GlobalPort; Marc Pingris of San Mig Coffee; Sonny Thoss of Alaska; LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel; and rookie June Mar Fajardo of Petron.
